Dementia and Memory

Recognition memory is the ability to identify as familiar a stimulus or a situation that has been encountered before and allows humans to identify people, places, words, sounds, and objects effortlessly and in a fraction of a second. However, recognition memory tasks of people with dementia engage both long-term memory (i.e., secondary memory) and working memory processes, which are mediated by front striatal systems (Chai et al. 2018). Thus, the stimulation of recognition memory may be particularly effective for detecting memory deficits in disorders that disrupt both memory systems.
